“It’s all in the mind,” as they say. This is what you most probably think of when facing fear or pain. This holds true when you think of hypnosis as a means of stopping bad habits such as alcoholism, drug addiction or simply, smoking. But willpower is merely not enough in putting a stop on these habits. This is where hypnosis can be of big help.

As a start, it would be best if one will be able to determine the causes of the addiction or bad habit – stress, boredom, nervousness, traumatic experiences, or problems. It’s a stepping stone to accept that a person indeed has a bad habit and is willing to undergo treatment to banish this habit.

The most common of numerous bad habits is smoking. It’s very easy to quit and then go back to smoking in a snap, especially when those around you are smokers as well. The usual excuse is “I’ll only have one” and before he knows it, he’s already back to smoking. The usual methods of avoiding smoking like the nicotine patches or gum provide relief from craving for a smoke, but are not enough to totally curb your twinge for a cigarette.

Another common bad habit is alcoholism. Persons with alcoholism usually depend on alcohol to drown out their negative feelings or temporarily escape their problems, which may lead to disconnection to family and friends who can be their support in trying times. Those who heavily depend on alcohol may need to have boost on their self-esteem and confidence so as to overcome the negative feeling, find a solution to their problems and patch-up differences caused by the alcoholism.

Drug addiction is also very common social problem very rampant these days. Persons who are into drugs want to feel as if they are on top of the world, nothing matters and that they can do anything, without thinking of the bad effects of drug addiction (as well as smoking and alcoholism) may eventually bring in the future.

Aside from the common clinical procedures (such as rehabilitation, detoxification and counseling) that a person can go through to treat these addiction, hypnosis is already widely used to help people avoid the addiction. It is the power of the subconscious mind that will help those people in getting over their smoking, alcohol or drug addiction.

Since hypnosis awakens the subconscious mind, the hypnotist will be able to implant ideas, feeling, suggestions or perceptions associated to an addiction. For example, a hypnotist may be able to implant the idea of lung cancer and other harmful effects of smoking in a patient’s mind, which may also lead him to somehow feel the effect it will have on his body. Aside from negative images, a hypnotist may also implant positive statements or images that may help the patient in getting through the addiction. It is through this process that a patient is led to change his way of thinking, and thus affect his decision making and behavior.
